Collective Dialogues

collective dialogues

These are a series of online dialogues with 5 or 6 artists and academics focused around a particular theme, text, artwork or video. We hold approximately five of these each year.

2024

Over 17 academics, artists, choreographers & writers have been invited to be part of these collective dialogues. For each dialogue we will use excerpts from texts, audio and video as the starting point for each conversation.

Monday 4th March

Facing Reality (1958) by C.L.R James, Grace Lee Boggs & Cornelius Castoriadis, pp.24-28. The American Revolution (1963) by James Boggs, chapter 2.

Tuesday 5th March

The Black Jacobins (1938) by C.L.R. James & Beverley Mullings. “Caliban, Social Reproduction & Our Future Yet To Come”, Geoforum 118 (2021), pp.150-158.

Wednesday 6th March

The Black Jacobins (1938) by C.L.R. James. “Culture on the Edges: Creolization in the Plantation Context” by Michel-Rolph Troulliot. Plantation Society in the Americas 5 (1998), pp.8-28. A short clip of Lia Rodrigues’ work Encantado.

Thursday 7th March

D’Angelo’s Voodoo, album; a recollection made by D’Angelo in a 2000 Vibe magazine interview with the writer dream hampton; and an observation made by the studio engineer for Voodoo, and a close collaborator with D’Angelo on the project, Russell Elevado, in a 2007 Red Bull Music Academy interview. 2023

Over 20 artists, academics, writers, curators have been invited to be part of these collective dialogues, Monday 24th – Thursday 27th April.

Monday and Tuesday’s participants will read a text written by Syliva Wynter as the starting poing for their collective dialogues. Wednesday and Thursday’s participants have contributed a short work (7 mins) – video, audio, text or other shareable in response to the research themes. These have been shared among participants and act as a starting point for a two 2-hour collective dialogues between 5-7 participants.

These were shared among participants and acted as a starting point for a series of 2-hour collective dialogues between 5 participants, Monday 7th – Wednesday 9th June, plus an 8-hour dialogue between 9 participants on Thursday 10th June. Thursday’s participants had been involved in the project in 2020.
